Bearded dragon swollen, firm joints or toes

Reptiles don’t excrete nitrogen as urea the way mammals do. They excrete uric acid, the white chalky part of a normal urate. When the kidneys can’t keep up, uric acid builds in the blood and crystallises where it settles. Those crystals are gout.

It takes two forms. Articular gout deposits crystals in joints, most visibly toes, ankles, knees and the jaw. Visceral gout deposits them in organs, commonly the kidneys themselves, and shows almost nothing on the outside until it is advanced. That is why gout is usually a diagnosis a vet reaches, not a keeper.

What you might see

• , Swollen, firm joints, often one or two toes or a hock, that don’t look like an injury
• , Reluctance to walk, climb or grip; favouring a limb
• , In advanced cases, chalky white nodules visible under the skin at joints or on the membranes of the mouth
• , The vague signs kidney trouble produces anyway: poor appetite, lethargy, weight loss

Where it comes from

• , Chronic dehydration, the mechanism chapter 9 warns about. Concentrated blood makes uric acid easier to crystallise and harder to excrete. This is the most preventable cause.
• , Kidney damage from any source, age, infection, past dehydration, some medications.
• , A diet far too heavy in animal protein for the animal’s age. An adult still eating like a juvenile is the classic version, per the ratios in 4.1.

Treatment

Veterinary, and managed rather than cured. Crystals that have formed don’t redissolve on a good diet. A vet confirms with blood uric acid levels and imaging, then manages with fluid therapy, diet correction, pain relief and, in some cases, medication that lowers uric acid production. Severely damaged joints sometimes need surgery. Untreated articular gout is painful and progressive, and visceral gout is life-limiting, so earlier is genuinely better.
