The beard
The beard is a projectable throat pouch supported by the hyoid apparatus. Flaring it makes the animal look substantially larger and exposes the darkened skin underneath. Two things happen there and they get confused.
- , Puffing is mechanical. It happens during display, but also during shed where it stretches the throat skin, after waking, while yawning, and sometimes for no visible reason.
- , Blackening is the emotional signal. 6.6 draws this distinction. Color change over the back and flanks is thermoregulatory pigment behavior. Darkening of the beard and the skin of the chest is an emotional response, closer to blushing.
Puffed and pale is usually nothing. Puffed and black means something.
