Bearded dragon skin dull, gray or patchy

A normal shed. Patchy is correct in this species

Is this urgent?

Not by itself. Skin dull, gray or patchy usually has an ordinary explanation, and the section below covers what to check. It becomes urgent when it arrives alongside one of the 5 same-day signs, or when it does not resolve once the cause is fixed.

Patchy is correct

Reptile skin doesn’t grow with the animal. A complete new layer is built underneath the old one, a separation layer forms between them, and the outer layer comes away. That event is ecdysis, and by the time you see anything it has been running underneath for weeks.

Snakes shed in one coherent sheet. Lizards don’t. In bearded dragons it comes away in flakes and patches, and different parts of the body run on their own schedule, a leg one day, the head three days later, a patch on the flank the week after.
