Running along the enclosure wall, scrabbling at the glass, sometimes rearing up against it. This is the single most misdiagnosed behavior in the hobby, because almost every source treats it as a condition with a cause when it is a general alarm output with many possible inputs. It’s a check-engine light. It tells you to open the bonnet. It doesn’t tell you what’s wrong.

Work the list in this order.

1. 1.Enclosure too small. 2.1 sets 4 × 2 × 2 ft as the minimum at any age. A dragon in a 40-gallon breeder isn’t exploring, it’s pacing a cage. The most common cause, and the one ruled out last because it’s the most expensive to fix.
2. 2.Reflection. The dragon sees a rival. This is why surfing spikes in males in spring, and why it often comes with head bobbing and a black beard. Cover the outside of at least three sides with vinyl, window film, contact paper or a printed background.
3. 3.Husbandry out of range. Too hot with nowhere to escape to, too cold to settle, lights too dim, cool side above 82°F / 28°C. See 3.7. A dragon looking for a thermal gradient that doesn’t exist will search the perimeter.
4. 4.Breeding season. Hormonally active males become restless and search for females. Females become restless before laying. Real, seasonal, and it largely rides out.
5. 5.Hunger, or the expectation of food. Dragons learn feeding routines fast. A dragon that surfs at the same time every day and stops when fed has trained you.
6. 6.Barren enclosure. No hides, no climbing, nothing to dig in, nothing to investigate. See 2.3. Same failure mode that causes all-day basking.
7. 7.Genuine stress, a new home, a cat that sits and watches the tank, an enclosure in a high-traffic corridor, another dragon visible in the room.
